In this guide, we'll take you on a journey through the best of Austria's gasthauses, beisls, and heurigers, and show you how to experience the local culture and authentic flavors of this beautiful country.

With our local knowledge, Max Travel Abroad Tours, we'll take you from cozy taverns to wine pubs, we'll provide you with insider tips on where to find the best local cuisine and cultural experiences. So grab your appetite and let's dig in!

Beisl

If you're looking for a casual spot to grab a bite and a drink, check out a Beisl. These cozy local taverns often have wooden paneled walls, and floors, and serve up hearty Austrian cuisine that's specific to the region. If you're there for lunch, you can usually enjoy a budget friendly 2 or 3 course meal with a different main dish every day, which is often a great value.

Konditorei

Indulge in the sweet side of Austria at a konditorei, where you'll find an array of delectable pastries, cakes, and traditional Austrian-style coffee. These pastry shops are renowned for their exquisite desserts, which are often made with high-quality ingredients, aka butter, and crafted with precision and tradition. Some of these charming establishments also have breakfast and lunch menus. Picture yourself in a plush and elegant setting, complete with crystal chandeliers and velvet booths, as you savor every bite of your delicious treat.

Max Travel Abroad tip:

Be aware Austrians enjoy dressing up their delectable desserts with a splash or two with rum or brandy. If order desserts with fresh fruits you can avoid desserts without added alcohol.

Café

If you're looking for an authentic Viennese coffee experience, head to a traditional Café house. While you won't find any syrupy coffee flavors here, you can choose from up to two dozen types of coffee, along with a few cakes and pastries.

Unlike a konditorei, these coffee houses don't typically offer elaborate desserts or other food options.

The best part of a Café? You can sit for hours without any pressure to move on, even after your espresso or melange (Austrian cappuccino) is long gone. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the slow pace of Viennese coffee culture.

Heuriger

Experience the Charm of a Heuriger. Discover the unique charm of Heuriger where rustic wine taverns run by local winemakers serve new wine under a special license during alternating months of the growing season. Enjoy a relaxed and rural atmosphere with buffet-style food and wooden outdoor seating.

One of my favorite foods at a Heuriger are the cold salads, fresh breads, spreads and Oma style condiments. Many Heuriger establishments are open year-round, while the traditional Heurigers are open on a municipal schedule and only serve the vintner's personal local wines.

For the best experience in Vienna, head to small villages just on the outskirts of Vienna, within 30 minutes on public transportation, and check out Heurigers in Baden bei Wien, the hometown of my husband's family or Grinzing, both located in the Vienna Woods just outside of Vienna.

The 'Vienna Heurigen Express' - a hop-on hop-off shuttle that starts at the bottom of Kahlenberg is popular with tourists and locals alike to take you between the Heurigers dotted all along the vineyard hillsides.

Don't miss out on this must-do experience for wine lovers visiting Vienna and many regions of Austria.

Keller

Discover Austria's cozy and intimate keller, cellar, restaurants, serving up traditional cuisine and local beer and wines in underground locations with rustic decor, high barrel brick or stone ceilings and low lighting.

Don't let the double flight of stairs daunt you, just hold on to the hand railing and head down the stairs. Central Vienna is known for having multiple keller restaurants, with lots of lore of the underground tunnels that connect them all.

Whether you're there for a full meal or just a snack to accompany your wine, a visit to an Austrian keller is a must-do experience for foodies and travelers alike. Many kellers have high ceilings, creating a spacious and airy atmosphere, and in the evenings, you can often enjoy live folk music.

Gasthaus

Austrian gasthauses, also known as guest houses, are a popular type of eatery found in rural areas and small villages throughout Austria. This adds to their charm and authenticity, as they offer a glimpse into traditional Austrian life and cuisine. These cozy and rustic establishments are often family-owned and operated, serving up delicious and traditional Austrian cuisine. Many gasthauses also offer hotel accommodations, making them a great budget wise choice for those looking for an Austrian experience. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and experience a more relaxed and authentic side of Austria, a visit to a gasthaus is highly recommended.

Bräuhaus

Austrian Bräuhauses, or beer houses, have a long tradition of brewing quality beer made from fresh and natural ingredients. The strict laws governing beer brewing in Austria ensure that consumers and beer lovers alike are guaranteed a high-quality product. Brauhauses often has a large indoor hall, and also an outdoor patio.

Austrian beer is known for its smooth taste and is a popular drink choice for lunch or dinner, especially when paired with traditional Austrian dishes like Wiener schnitzel or wurstel sausages. Despite not being the first country that comes to mind when thinking of beer, Austria's Bräuhauses are a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the country's rich beer culture.

Würstelstand

If you're wandering the streets of Vienna and find yourself in need of a quick and delicious snack, look no further than the Würstelstand, also known as Sausage Stand. These permanent structures are a beloved institution in Austrian cities, offering up a variety of low-cost sausages, snacks, drinks, and beer.

While some Würstelstands may serve up sausages, bratwurst, pizza, noodles, or gyros, there's one thing they have in common - no seating! But don't let that deter you - customers eat while standing at little ledges along the side of the building, it is the perfect option for those on the go.

And it's not just the locals who love these sausage stands - they're a gathering place for all kinds of people, from elegantly dressed opera-goers to late-night revelers looking for a tasty snack. Whether you're in the mood for a classic Käsekrainer or want to try something new, or a Currywurst, you're sure to find something to tickle your taste buds at a Würstelstand. And the best part? These delicious snacks won't break the bank - they're a low-cost option that's perfect for budget-conscious travelers. So next time you're in Vienna, be sure to stop by and pay your respects to this beloved UNESCO institution!

Restaurant

In Austria and most of Europe, the term "restaurant" typically refers to a more expensive and upscale type of establishment with a more discerning or focused cuisine. Unlike other types of Austrian eating establishments, restaurants offer a formal 'table cloth' dining experience and attentive waitstaff, and customers are expected to take their time and enjoy their meal, often ordering in courses. Although the service may be slower than at other types of eateries, the quality of the food and service is often unmatched, making it a great choice for special occasions or when you're looking to indulge in a memorable meal.

Austria is a country with a rich culinary heritage, and its many eating establishments offer a diverse range of options for those looking to explore it. But don't forget about establishments themselves!

Each gasthaus, beisl, and heuriger has its own unique ambiance that can make your dining experience truly unforgettable. Whether you're in the mood for a relaxed garden party vibe or a cozy cabin in the woods atmosphere, there's an eating establishment for you. So get ready for an authentic Austrian culinary adventure that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you with unforgettable memories!

These traditional establishments are the real deal, and you won't be disappointed. Trust us, you'll be raving about your experience for years to come!
